Not really. There are problems making it so the game is unplayable.

Play Nitro Pack on Windows 7/8 (First Revision)

Post by Lightfoot »

These instructions assume you have Nitro Pack installed!

SETUP:

Windows 8 users download Classic Shell (or similar program):

http://www.classicshell.net

Download and extract Nitro Patch III to your Nitro Pack installation directory:

http://www.interstate76.com/download/nitropatchIII.zip

Download and install FRAPS:

http://www.fraps.com

Users with NVidia chipset video cards download and install NVidia Inspector:

http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/nvi ... nload.html

Users with ATI chipset video cards download and install DXTORY:

http://www.exkode.com

Navigate to your Nitro Pack installation folder, right click NITRO.EXE, choose Send To/Desktop Create Shortcut

Right click the Nitro Pack short cut and add -d3d to the executable line:

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\I76Nitro\nitro.exe" -d3d
***

PLAY:

Start DXTORY/nVidia Inspector and set framerate to 60.

Start FRAPS and configure to show FPS in game.

Start Task Manager and kill EXPLORER.EXE process tree.

Use File/Run/Browse and find and run the Nitro Pack desktop shortcut you created.

After the game starts:

Add BATTLEZONE1.COM to your server list.

Remove all other servers.

Join/Host games to your hearts content.

***

As a side note:

The game is still prone to crashing but that's Nitro!

You may need to adjust your User Account Control settings under Windows 7/8 to allow proper installation of the patch.

***

If you attempt to join a game and the connection times out for any reason, active games may not be displayed until you exit the server window and rejoin the session.

***

If you are using the -D3D switch after NITRO.EXE in the command line of your shortcut, you do not need to use DXTORY or FRAPS for frame rate limiting, the patch should provide a stable 60 FPS via VSYNCH.

***

Feel free to post questions and comments. There are entirely too many people struggling to get the game running properly and it should be really, really easy.

I did this last night on my friend's computer using DXTORY on his AMD chipset. What's nice is the current version of DXTORY has its own framerate display so I didn't have to run Fraps at the same time.
I first set it to 60fps but the napalm hose and AI were still buggy so I tried 30fps, then 24. At 24fps the napalm hose worked like the 50' cattail of death as it should, but the AI were still chattering their steering and rapping their brakes. In the past I've noticed the AI will eventually function normally but I unfortunately didn't get to witness it last night. Maybe restarting the computer after installing everthing might have helped. If that doesn't work I'll try Fraps when I get a chance.

OK, the above instructions are basically crap due to all of the "advancements" in our software selections, so...

Try these steps first:

0) Uninstall / Rename any existing installations or attempts
1) Install from disk (preferable) or GoG installer
2) Locate installation directory and change/add permissions for “Everyone” to “Full”
3) Install Nitro Patch III (only) into installation directory and overwrite all files
4) Install Nitro.EXE 30fps patch into installation directory and overwrite all files
5) Install ALLNITROMAPS.ZIP into installation directory and overwrite all files
6) Install DIVERMap Pack.ZIP into installation directory and overwrite all files
7) Install nGlide 1.05 from ZEUS-SOFTWARE.COM
8 ) Locate NITRO.EXE in installation directory, right click and choose Send to Desktop (create shortcut)
9) Right click Nitro desktop shortcut and go to Properties
a) On Shortcut Tab change add: -glide after the final “
eg- "C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\I76Nitro\nitro.exe" –glide
b) On Compatibility Tab choose “Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 95
c) Click OK
10) Double click the desktop icon and cross your fingers…click yes if prompted to run.
