I emailed the people rereleasing the game, and they said that multiplayer by IP address should work fine.

Intersting...

Post by Lightfoot »

Here's the deal...we never lost the ability to play I'76 IP to IP...what we lost was everyone having a public IP address. The game didn't work behind a router due to the dynamic port assignment code.

Nitro Pack didn't have the IP functionality installed as part of the networking protocols so I'm not sure how they would have fixed that issue.

If they did bother to rewrite the DLL's to resolve the dynamic port assignment problems I'd be interested in hearing about it....then all we need to do is reverse port some of the cooler maps from Nitro back to I'76 and we're good to go.

Can anyone test this?

GoG i76 + Kali

Post by zaphod »

(Reposting this here on the tech forum so that non-members can find it)

Well, it has been an adventure, but with a series of tricks, I've gotten everything in i76 working properly, and hosted an online game via a Kali demo.

The installer from GOG solves all of the installation issues, and the sound issues that have plagued the game on modern systems. I'm running it on a 64bit Win7 machine with a Core2 Duo.

Adding the -glide switch runs the game with an OpenGlide wrapper. (replacing the wrapper with the dgVoodoo wrapper has enabled me to run in 1650x1050)

Setting the compatibility mode to Win98 helps with a few glitches.

Shutting down explorer.exe keeps the menus and cutscene video from having crazy colors. (Not critical, but it means you can get the full experience)

Using CPU Grabber set to have affinity with the same processor as i76.exe and cranked up to eat 80 percent of the CPU power slows down the game enough to have original physics, and allows correct use of flamethrowers and mortars! (Tweaking for your own system will certainly apply)

Running Kali allowed me to host a game via IPX.

Holy Shit!

Marry me. :D

X4 945 / Win 7 64bit. Gonna splash the cash and hope for the best, oh god I'76, Nitro and everyone who played online, I missed you all so much. Also looks like a resurgence in the community from a bunch of new [and old] guys. Check out the GOG forums for workarounds for problems and online servers using Tunngle.

Back on the roads soon. Hopefully addon maps will work again properly soon too, as they seem to be finicky.

Forgive me...

Post by Lightfoot »

...forgive me if this doesn't sound warm and fuzzy:

So what?

*EVERYTHING* that has been mentioned in this post was accomplished back in 2007 and I'm still answering questions about how to clean up the mess!

In a nutshell: You're running a bastardized version of the game...it was called it "Gold" back in the day and told anyone running it to upgrade to Nitro Pack or downgrade to original due to intra-version compatibility issues...

...you know, like the ones people are having running custom maps?

Let's distill my fading interest in this revival down to *ONE* fact:

If it's *NOT* Nitro Pack in an IPX wrapper *NO ONE* will come back...

Show me a Nitro game and lobby with 2 or more people in it on Hamachi, Kali or whatever poison you're taking and I'll summon the elders...

Hell, find me on IM when it happens because it will be breaking news...

S'okay , I'm used to you being cranky. =D

The GOG release is far from perfect, but people can buy the game cheap and get it running. Even if it's only single player, it's nice to see folks enjoying the game again.

I like being able to get classic games on the cheap via download with no DRM and no download limit.

I say we unplug our routers, dive into the modem for direct access to the Internet and have a TNE!

Sounds good to me!

Well, actually it just sounds good. I can't actually do anything about it because I don't have a PC, or the time to be honest. Someday the nostalgia will be to great and I'll just have to dig an old computer out of the basement on a trip back to the States (been living in London the last 4 years)!

Ended up here after talking about old computer games with my girlfriend, haven't been here in years but nice to see a few of ya'll are still about!

Hey wait it's now $6. Wasn't it $20? If so I'm glad I waited.

Rumor has it that the GoG version and Nitro Patch III work well together...
