Windows 10 is a pain

Post by adonael »

Well long story short, I have a spare laptop with windows 10 pro. I was trying to set up Nitro on my spare just in case, or to have a little fun with friends when they visit.

I've followed the instructions of the "The Quick and Dirty" to the letter but I am still having issues.

The laptop runs Win 10 Pro 64 bit with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 and a Nivida NVS 4200M.

At first try I was getting the 3DFX screen and then a black screen. Now I get the wonderful "Unhandled Exception" error.

Also is there a preferred way to set up compatibility for Nitro on Windows 10? The Compatibility menu is quite different from 7.

Unless you're *REALLY* into computers you're not going to have an easy time of it.

You're probably better off using the native PATCH III NITRO.EXE and running in 8-bit mode and a frame limiter.

It's a *LOT* of work getting it to run in Windows 10 and you have to chop out almost *ALL* the security precautions that are built into the OS.

Then you have to get into the event log and figure out which part of the game is blowing out where...then find a fix.

That's why there's just an audio fix-ish and not an audio fix.

I just posted a complete guide on getting this game to work on Windows 10 computers in this forum section. If you follow it to the letter you should be good. I had to do ALOT of trial and error just to get both games working properly and to get the 3dfx visuals working. Some minor issues still remain but those are easily fixed as I detailed them in that guide.

Sorry for the thread resurrection but I am trying to get my original I76 working on Windows 10 64 bit and just read in this thread EnioHabev's comment about having posted a complete guide on getting it working in Windows 10 but when I ran a Search of the forums for EnioHabev's posts I couldn't find a match. I know it's over a year ago but is the post EnioHabev refers to still here does anyone know please?

Enio's tread was for Nitro Pack, not original I'76.

We moved the thread in question to an offline forum because it didn't jive with our current, supported Nitro Pack installation instructions.

Unfortunately, there isn't a vetted installation for original I'76 since Nitro Pack superseded the original game in form and functionality.

However, that doesn't mean you're out of luck. "Someone" like to poke around with things and has posted an "unzip and go" version of the game on our server: http://interstate76.com/download/i76-stable.zip

Download, unzip the files to the root of your C:\ drive, then send a shortcut to your desktop and cross your fingers.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the quick reply, Lightfoot, but that link appears to be broken - I get a 404 PAGE NOT FOUND error. Has the file in question been removed?

You'll have to do me a favor if/when I make that link (more) public and let everyone know what you had to do to get the game running.

I'm pretty sure the answer is "unzip and go" but I put the package together so of course it's going to work for me as advertized.

Thanks.

Yeah it was pretty much plug N play IE I just unzipped it to a folder named 'I76' in the root of the C drive, copied the shortcut and boom, the funky 70s vibe started up.

I have tried setting the Compatibility Settings to Windows 95 mode and as Administrator but I'm not sure as it's made any additional improvements as such. It might be a little more smooth/stable but that could just be the placebo effect. Put it this way, I am leaving those Compatibility Settings applied for now as they certainly don't seem to be doing any harm.

Cheers.

You're going to run into an issue saving the games during the TRIP.

When you get there, let me know and I'll send you the files from one of my test builds and you can overwrite them with your games.

For whatever reason that particular build won't let you save new games...

I think the saving and loading of games under the TRIP is working just fine it seems to me. I've already done a few 'scenes' now over numerous days.

What I will have to look into though is finding out why the keys for steering left and right seem to interrupted / cancelled every time I fire my weapons. Most annoying!

I think I have solved the issue with the keys for steering left and right seeming to be interrupted/cancelled every time I fire my weapon - pressing either of the Shift, Ctrl or Alt buttons in game (I have the fire button assigned to Ctrl) 'breaks' the input so, for now, I have assigned fire as the 'Slash' key and all seems to be OK now.
