No hardware disabling necessary!

According to Miki Maus on the VOGONS forum:

http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?=&p=100776

"For those of you who hate lowering sound acceleration everytime you
want to play I'76 I've found out that only two click sounds in menu
cause the game to freeze, so by invalidating those two sounds you'll
lose menu click sounds but the game should work fine with full sound
acceleration.

Search for last two RIFF strings in Database.mw2 and change them to
something else, ie. PIFF."

I used a text editor (vim) to make this change to DATABASE.MW2 and I76 Gold works like a charm. No more need to copy a fresh I76PLYR.DEF and manually enable sound every time you run the game.

Since the click sound in question is also used on the salvage menu, and thus froze between Trip missions, I can now play through the Trip again!

Using the glide wrapper procedure in
http://interstate76.com/message/viewtopic.php?t=855 gives me a framerate of 60 (my LCD refresh) and Fraps record mode can bring it down to 25. At this rate the physics and AI are acceptibly close to the original, though the traction still seems a bit sticky to me.

Thus, I76 Gold can be played without disabling either video or audio hardware. Additionally, I'm using a USB wheel (Microsoft Sidewinder) and mouse (Microsoft Trackman), though I still use a PS2 keyboard.

The only outstanding issue is the texture corrpution requiring a frequent double-tap of the ESC key.

OR, you could just change the SFX in Sound Options to 0, and re-enable it in the mission.
